General Instructions

Choose your state from the list below to access detailed instructions for both business and personal tax extensions.

OR personal income tax returns are due by April 15th in most years.

Oregon offers a 6-month extension, which moves the filing deadline from April 15 to October 15.

To request an Oregon extension, file Form 40-EXT by the original due date of your return. However, you should not use Form 40-EXT if you have a valid Federal extension and you owe zero Oregon tax for the taxable year.

If you have an approved Federal tax extension (IRS Form 4868), you will automatically receive an Oregon tax extension. In this case, you do not need to file a separate state extension form unless you’re making an Oregon tax payment.

A tax extension gives you extra time to file. It does not give you more time to pay your Oregon income tax. All state tax payments are due by the original deadline of the return. Any OR tax that hasn’t been paid by the proper due date will be subject to interest and penalties. You can make an Oregon extension payment with Form 40-EXT, or pay electronically through Oregon’s Electronic Services system: www.oregon.gov/dor/epayments
