General Instructions
Choose your state from the list below to access detailed instructions for both business and personal tax extensions.
OH individual income tax returns are due by April 15, in most years — or by the 15th day of the 4th month following the close of the taxable year (for fiscal year filers).
Ohio offers a 6-month extension for individuals that have an approved Federal extension, which moves the filing deadline from April 15 to October 15.
Ohio does not have its own separate state extension form. To obtain an Ohio tax extension, you must first file a Federal tax extension (IRS Form 4868). If you have a valid 6-month Federal extension, you will automatically receive an Ohio extension for the same amount of time.
An extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay your Ohio income tax. All state tax payments are due by the original deadline of the return. Any tax that hasn’t been paid by the proper due date will be subject to interest and penalties. You can pay the tax balance due for your Ohio extension with Form IT 40P, or pay electronically through Ohio ePayment: www.tax.ohio.gov/online_services/epayment
