General Instructions

Choose your state from the list below to access detailed instructions for both business and personal tax extensions.

Business tax returns are due by April 30 — or by the last day of the 4th month following the close of the taxable year (for fiscal year filers).

Michigan offers a 4-month business extension, which moves the filing deadline to the last day of the 8th month following the original deadline of your return (August 30 for calendar year filers).

To request a Michigan extension, file Form 4 by the original deadline of your return.

An extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay. Your Michigan tax balance must be paid by the original due date to avoid penalties and interest. If you owe tax, you must include your Michigan extension payment with Form 4.

A Federal tax extension (IRS Form 7004) will not automatically extend your Michigan business filing deadline. In order to obtain a Michigan tax extension, you must make a request using Form 4.
