General Instructions
Choose your state from the list below to access detailed instructions for both business and personal tax extensions.
State personal income tax returns are due by April 15, in most years — or by the 15th day of the 4th month following the end of the taxable year (for fiscal year filers).
Maryland offers a 6-month extension, which moves the filing deadline from April 15 to October 15 (for calendar year filers).
If you have an approved Federal tax extension (IRS Form 4868), you will automatically receive a Maryland tax extension. In this case, you do not need to file a separate state form unless you owe Maryland income tax (see below).
To request a Maryland-only extension, file Form 502E by the original due date of your return. Form 402E is also used to pay the tax balance due for your Maryland extension. Do not use Form 502E if your Maryland tax liability is zero.
If you don’t have a Federal extension (IRS Form 4868) and you owe zero Maryland income tax, you must file your extension request by telephone (410-260-7829) or electronically using Maryland’s Internet tax filing system: interactive.marylandtaxes.com/Individuals
An extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay your Maryland income tax. All state tax payments are due by the original deadline of the return. Any Maryland tax not paid by the proper due date will be subject to interest and penalties. You can make a Maryland extension payment with Form 502E, or pay electronically through iFile Maryland: interactive.marylandtaxes.com/iFile
To determine if you owe Maryland tax, you can use the Tax Payment Worksheet on Form 502E.
