General Instructions

Choose your state from the list below to access detailed instructions for both business and personal tax extensions.

NY individual income tax returns are due by April 15, in most years — or by the 15th day of the 4th month following the close of the taxable year (for fiscal year filers).

New York State offers a 6-month extension, which moves the individual filing deadline from April 15 to October 15 (for calendar year filers).

To apply for a New York extension, file Form IT-370 by the original due date of your return. Form IT-370 must be filed electronically using NY Online Services: www.tax.ny.gov/pit/file/ext

An extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay your New York income tax. All state tax payments are due by the original deadline of the return. Any NY tax that hasn’t been paid by the proper due date will be subject to interest and penalties. You can make a New York extension payment with Form IT-370-V, or pay electronically through NY Online Services: www.tax.ny.gov/pit/extension_payment_options

NOTE: To request a paper version of Form IT-370-V, contact the NY Department of Taxation and Finance.

If you are a fiscal-year filer and you need a state tax extension, you must call the NY Department of Taxation and Finance. Click here for the telephone contact list.
