General Instructions
Choose your state from the list below to access detailed instructions for both business and personal tax extensions.
RI individual income tax returns are due by April 15, in most years.
Rhode Island offers a 6-month extension, which moves the filing deadline from April 15 to October 15.
To request a Rhode Island extension, file Form RI-4868 by the original due date of your return. You will need to complete Form RI-4868 in duplicate: the original must be submitted by April 15, and the copy attached to your RI tax return when you file.
If you obtain a Federal tax extension (IRS Form 4868) and you owe zero Rhode Island tax for the taxable year, you will automatically be granted a Rhode Island tax extension. In this case, you do not need to file Form RI-4868.
A tax extension gives you extra time to file. It does not give you more time to pay your Rhode Island income tax. All state tax payments are due by the original deadline of the return. Any RI tax that hasn’t been paid by the proper due date will be subject to interest and penalties. Use Form RI-4868 to make an extension payment for your Rhode Island tax.
If you don’t have to make a Rhode Island extension payment, do not submit Form RI-4868.
