7 Places to File a Personal Tax Extension in 2026

To file a personal tax extension, choose a service that supports Form 4868, clearly explains its fee, and provides a submission record. For most 2025 individual returns, the extension request was due April 15, 2026, and a valid extension provides filing time through October 15, 2026. It does not extend the payment deadline.

September 2026 update: The ordinary extension-request deadline has passed. If you already have a valid extension, focus on completing your return. If you missed the original deadline, file and pay as soon as possible unless specific IRS relief applies; buying an extension service now does not retroactively create a timely extension.

Compare seven personal extension options

This is a practical comparison of published service information, not a claim that every service was independently tested or that one provider guarantees IRS acceptance. This guide is published by FileLater, one of the services listed. Confirm current pricing, filing availability, and terms before paying.

TaxExtension.com Dedicated extension service Personal e-file tiers and optional services

1. TaxExtension.com

TaxExtension.com pricing lists a free print-and-mail option and paid personal e-file plans. Its basic personal electronic option starts at $19.95 in the published pricing reviewed for this update. Higher tiers include additional services. Read guarantee conditions and distinguish a completed form from an IRS-accepted submission.

2. FileLater

FileLater provides personal tax extension filing and a separate business extension workflow. This can be useful when you need both an individual return extension and an entity return extension. Those are separate requests; one does not extend the other. Review your selected service and fee before checkout.

3. FreeTaxExtension

FreeTaxExtension provides a printable extension option and an e-file option. A free printable form must still be mailed correctly and on time. Do not assume “free” printing includes electronic transmission, IRS acknowledgment, or state filing.

4. TurboTax

TurboTax Easy Extension offers free personal extension filing. Check its current filing window and follow the extension-specific process. Filing the extension does not mean your full return has been filed or that you purchased return preparation.

5. H&R Block

H&R Block is an option for taxpayers who want help from a tax professional. Ask which extension service is available, whether electronic filing is included, and what assistance costs. Do not assume that office assistance and self-service software have the same price or features.

6. FreeTaxUSA

FreeTaxUSA advertises free personal extension e-filing. This is Form 4868 for an individual return, including an individual who reports a sole proprietorship on Schedule C. It is not a substitute for a corporation’s or partnership’s Form 7004.

7. TaxSlayer

TaxSlayer states that there is no charge to file a tax extension. Its full-return product eligibility and fees are separate. Use its Form 4868 instructions and retain the acknowledgment.

Other free ways to request an extension

IRS Free File extension filing is available through participating partners regardless of income. The income restriction for free full-return preparation does not govern extension eligibility. You can also mail Form 4868 or make a qualifying electronic payment designated for an extension by the applicable deadline, without filing a separate Form 4868.

Payment and state deadlines still matter

For most individuals, 2025 tax was due April 15, 2026. Interest generally accrues on unpaid tax. Failure-to-pay and failure-to-file penalties have separate rules, caps, and possible relief. With a valid extension, the filing penalty generally begins after the extended deadline; payment interest generally begins after the original payment deadline.

Qualifying overseas taxpayers, combat-zone personnel, and people covered by disaster relief can have different deadlines. Check state tax extension requirements separately rather than assuming a federal extension covers your state.

Before you submit

Verify your name, SSN, tax year, estimated liability, and payments. Save the accepted acknowledgment or proof of timely mailing. If an electronic request is rejected, follow the applicable correction and resubmission procedures promptly. For entity returns, compare our business tax extension options.

Need More Time to File Your Tax Return?

A timely tax extension gives you additional time to file your return. Submit your request by the applicable deadline, and pay any tax due by the original payment deadline. An extension to file is not an extension to pay.
