5 Places to File a Business Tax Extension in 2026

To file a business tax extension, identify the return your entity files. Corporations and partnerships generally use Form 7004. Sole proprietors usually extend their individual return with Form 4868. An LLC’s federal tax classification determines its form.

September 2026 update: The ordinary spring extension-request deadlines for 2025 calendar-year returns have passed. A service cannot retroactively create a timely extension. If you already extended a partnership or S corporation return, the usual filing deadline is September 15, 2026. If you missed a deadline, file promptly and check whether specific IRS relief applies.

Five filing options to compare

Maine State Tax Guide

This guide uses published service information and is provided by FileLater, one of the listed providers. Confirm current fees, supported returns, and availability. The appropriate choice depends on your form and support needs, rather than unsupported acceptance-rate rankings.

1. TaxExtension.com

TaxExtension.com lists a free print-and-mail option and business e-file starting at $24.95. Higher tiers include additional services. Check support for your underlying return and the conditions of any guarantee.

2. FileLater

FileLater’s business tax extension service guides filers through supported entity extensions. Verify the entity name, EIN, return type, tax period, and checkout fee. An owner’s personal return generally needs its own extension; extending the entity does not extend the owner.

3. FreeTaxExtension

FreeTaxExtension provides printable and electronic extension options. Free printing is different from paid electronic filing. Generating a PDF does not file the form: you must submit it correctly by the applicable deadline.

4. FreeTaxUSA for sole proprietors

FreeTaxUSA offers free Form 4868 filing for individual returns. This can suit a sole proprietor or an individually owned, disregarded single-member LLC. It is not a Form 7004 solution for partnerships or corporations, including LLCs taxed as those entities.

5. ExpressExtension

ExpressExtension lists Form 7004 at $19.95 per form, with volume pricing and other extension forms available. Compare professional pricing, supported forms, and state services if you handle multiple entities.

Other options exist. For example, TurboTax advertises free business extensions for specified entity types. Confirm your particular form and the filing window.

Submit the right request

  1. Identify the underlying return and due date.
  2. Match the entity name and identification number to IRS records.
  3. Enter the tax year and reasonably estimate any tax liability.
  4. Submit the correct extension and pay tax by the original payment deadline.
  5. Retain the accepted acknowledgment or proof of mailing and address rejections promptly.

Form 7004 generally provides six months, while Form 1041 generally receives five and a half months. Other exceptions exist. An automatic extension still requires a correct and timely request.

Penalties depend on the return

Partnership and S corporation late-return penalties can apply even without entity-level income tax due. For returns due in 2026, the general amount is $255 per partner or shareholder for each month or part of a month, up to 12 months, subject to exceptions and relief. See IRS penalty guidance.

For returns subject to the unpaid-tax filing penalty, the general rate is 5% per month or part of a month, up to 25%. Payment penalties and interest are separate. If both filing and payment penalties apply in the same month, the filing penalty is reduced by the payment penalty. A valid extension protects filing time through the extended due date; it does not erase payment obligations.

Check state and individual requirements

Review the state tax extension requirements wherever the entity files. Separate requests or timely payments may be required. For an owner’s individual return, see our personal extension comparison and personal tax extension guide.

Need More Time to File Your Tax Return?

A timely tax extension gives you additional time to file your return. Submit your request by the applicable deadline, and pay any tax due by the original payment deadline. An extension to file is not an extension to pay.
