Vermont Filing Due Date: VT individual income tax returns are due by April 15.
Extended Deadline with Vermont Tax Extension: Vermont offers a 6-month extension, which moves the individual filing deadline from April 15 to October 15.
Vermont Tax Extension Form: To request a Vermont extension, file Form IN-151 by the original due date of your return (April 15). If you have an approved Federal tax extension (IRS Form 4868), you may submit a copy of your Federal extension instead of filing Form IN-151.
Vermont Extension Payment Requirement: A tax extension gives you extra time to file. It does not give you more time to pay your Vermont income tax. All state tax payments are due by the original deadline of the return (April 15). Any VT tax that hasn’t been paid by the proper due date will be subject to interest and penalties. If you owe Vermont tax, you should include an extension payment with Form IN-151.
Vermont Tax Extension Tip: You are allowed to file your Vermont tax return up to 60 days past the original April 15 deadline without incurring a late filing penalty — even if you did not get a Vermont tax extension.
