The State of New York requires that you file New York Form IT-370 for a personal state income tax extension if you owe state income taxes. If the form is completed accurately and on time, you will be granted an automatic 6-month tax extension from the original filing deadline.

If you are approved for a federal extension, you can alternatively attach a copy of your federal extension (IRS Tax Form 4868 ) to your state tax return and include “New York State Copy” at the top of the form.

Filing for a New York tax extension will not provide you with additional time to pay any tax balance due, which must be paid by the original filing due date, or interest and other payment penalties may apply.
