State of New York Personal Income Tax Extensions – Tax Year 2011

 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

If you can't file on time, you can get an automatic six-month extension of time to file Form IT-201, Resident Income Tax Return, or Form IT-203, Nonresident and Part-Year resident Income Tax Return.

You can also get an automatic extension (generally five months) of time to file Form IT-204, Partnership Return, or Form IT-205, Fiduciary Income Tax Return.

You must request the extension of time to file on or before the due date of your return. Request your extension online.

You can complete your request for free using our online service starting in late January.

You must e-file your extension if you prepare your extension using software that allows you to e-file it.

If your paid preparer is required to e-file your tax return, and is also preparing your extension request, the preparer must e-file your extension request.

The online and e-file options provide you with a confirmation that we received your extension request.

Fiscal year filers should contact us to request an extension.

When to file
You must file your extension request on or before the filing deadline for your return. Generally, the filing deadline for tax year 2011 calendar-year filers is April 17, 2012. However, there are special filing deadlines in certain instances. An extension request filed after the filing deadline for your return will be invalid.

Payment of tax
You must make full payment of the properly estimated tax balance due when you request your extension of time to file.

For additional information, please visit the State of New York Department of Taxation and Finance website.
