State of Arizona Personal Income Tax Extensions – Tax Year 2010

 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

NOTE: Arizona’s filing deadline for 2010 (calendar year) tax returns falls on April 18, 2011 this year, because April 15th is a legal holiday in Washington, DC.

Arizona individual income tax returns can be filed as early as January 1, 2011 and no later than April 18, 2011. For fiscal year filers, returns are due by the fifteenth day of fourth month following the close of your fiscal year.

If you cannot file your tax return on time, you can request a six-month extension from the Arizona Department of Revenue. Keep in mind, a tax extension only gives you extra time to file your return, and any tax that you owe must still be paid by the original deadline (April 18, 2011).

There are two ways to obtain an Arizona income tax extension:

1. Apply for a state tax extension using Arizona Form 204 (Application for Filing Extension) and mail it to the appropriate address, listed at the bottom of the form. Be sure to submit your Form 204 to the Arizona Department of Revenue by April 18, 2011. If you owe tax, submit your payment with Form 204 to avoid incurring penalties or interest charges. Note that you do not have to attach a copy of your extension application to your tax return when you file, but be sure to check Box 82F on Page 1 of your return.

2. If you have successfully applied for a federal income tax extension ― using IRS Tax Form 4868 (Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return) ― you will automatically be granted a state income tax extension for your Arizona return. If you do not need to make a 2010 tax payment and you have received confirmation that your federal extension request was approved, there is nothing else you need to do. On the other hand, if you owe tax, you can make a payment electronically on the Arizona Department of Revenue website, or submit your tax payment with Form 204 (Application for Filing Extension) and mail it to:
ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE
P.O. Box 29085
Phoenix, AZ  85038-9085

For additional information, please visit the State of Arizona Department of Revenue website.
